Gina is a town at the confluence of the Maja and the Glina rivers in the region of Banovina, 22 km southwest of Petrinja; elevation 113 m. First mentioned in 1205. Economy is based on farming, livestock breeding, textile, wood and timber industry and building trade. Glina is located on the main road Sisak - Glina - Dvor, i.e. Glina - Gvozd - Tusilovici toward Karlovac and Zadar, and on the railroad Karlovac - Sisak. The town core has streets intersecting at a right angle with a park on the main square and a series of harmoniously built classicist houses. The late Baroque-classicist church of St. John Nepomuk was built by B. Felbinger in the period 1824-1827. The church was destroyed in the Patriotic War in 1991.
The small town is located in a hilly landscape between the Kupa valley and Zrinska Gora Mountain. It features the town palace and a monument to Viceroy Josip Jelacic. The remains of mediaeval fortifications on the nearby mountains Zrinska Gora and Petrova Gora bear witness to the existence of early habitations in this area. |
